Coimbatore police are on the lookout for an 18-year-old boy who went absconding after allegedly raping and impregnating his 13-year-old sister.

The shocking incident came to light on Monday after the girl, who is now six months pregnant, came forward to give a formal police complaint against her elder brother. According to news reports, the accused, who was a final year student at a polytechnic college in Coimbatore, was addicted to porn videos and used to show pornographic clips to his sister on his mobile phone and subsequently sexually abused her multiple times. The girl did not disclose this to her parents fearing that they would scold her.

On Sunday night, the girl fell ill and her parents took her to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Doctors there took a scan which led to the discovery of the girl’s pregnancy and they alerted the police.

Police and Child Protection Society Unit officers came and conducted an inquiry on the matter but the parents allegedly did not cooperate and refused to file a complaint against their son.

After multiple attempts to convince the parents failed, the victim herself gave a complaint against her brother. Following this, the police registered an FIR against the teenager under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused, meanwhile, is absconding and the Selvapuram police have formed two teams to nab him.

A police officer told the Times of India that on Monday night, police visited the house of one of the relatives of the family after they got information that he was hiding there but, they could not find him.

Over 2,003 cases of POCSO are pending in various stages in Tamil Nadu, according to the Supreme Court, as per a news report in May. Over half of these cases are pending for the last year and half. A total of 219 cases of the 2,003 have been pending for the last three years, while 509 cases have been pending for more than two years.
