Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a victory parade in the national capital, a day after the BJP stormed to power in Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand.

Amid the presence of thousands of party activists and supporters, PM Modi, flanked by prominent party leaders, began the march from Le Meridien hotel to the nearby party headquarters on Ashoka Road where the BJP parliamentary board was to meet to decide on the Chief Ministers for the two states.

Top party leaders, including BJP president Amit Shah, were also expected to brainstorm about the future course of action in Goa where the recent polls have resulted in a hung assembly.

Elaborate security arrangements were made by Delhi Police for Modi's victory parade.

Amid chants of “Bharat mata ki jai” and “Modi, Modi,” BJP president Amit Shah thanked “the hero of UP’s victory,” for his leadership and welcomed PM Modi to deliver his victory speech.

Taking the stage before his enthusiastic supporters, PM Modi spoke of an emerging “new India”.

I witness before me, a new India. That the poor are voting for development is emblematic of a new India. This is the young people’s new India. This is the India which is every woman dreams of. This is the India which will give opportunities to poor people. The poor people are not looking for pity, they’re saying, “I will work hard for myself, you give me opportunities.” In this new India, I’m not one of those who think about which all parties the BJP beat in the elections. Winning these elections means winning the people’s order. And I will obey the people’s orders, so that I can fulfill their dreams.

He said that their victory in UP was an emotional moment for the BJP, as it coincides with the birth centenary celebrations of Deen Dayal Upadhyay.

Modi said that the BJP’s win was the result of hard work. Thanking his supporters he said: “ Some of our candidates are not popular, have never come on TV or newspapers, but you still put your faith in us, but I promises you that we will leave no stone unturned to bring progress to these five states”.

This is one the Prime Minister who is asked why do you work so much? I am humbled by this opportunity to work for you. This victory is for those who voted and even for those who haven’t. The government doesn’t have the right to discriminate among its people and BJP doesn’t indulge in it either.

He said that the BJP is the most democratic party of India.

It is true that governments in democracy are elected with the majority’s support. But it has to work for everybody.

Reiterating the promises he made in 2014 after the victory in the general elections, he said:

In 2014, when we came to power I had said three thing. I’d like to reiterate them again. Firstly, I had said that we may commit some errors, but we bear no ill-intent. Second, I had promised that we will work hard. Third, I had said that we will provide evidence of work done.

PM Modi concluded his speech by thanking all his supporters and party workers “who made this victory happen”.
