Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Uttarakhand’s Harsil to celebrate Diwali with Indian Army and ITBPP jawans on Wednesday, 7 November.

Addressing the jawans, the Prime Minister said:

“Your devotion to duty in the remote icy heights is enabling the strength of the nation, and securing the future and the dreams of 125 crore Indians.”

PM Modi also said India is taking great strides forward in defence. He spoke about the various measures being taken for the welfare of ex-servicemen, including One Rank- One Pension.

After the meeting, PM Modi went to Kedarnath where he offered prayers at the temple shrine. He will celebrate Diwali at the Himalayan temple this year.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister took to Twitter to wish the country a prosperous Diwali.

He had arrived in Dehradun early on Wednesday morning, from where he proceeded to Harsil to meet the jawans.

On Tuesday, 6 November, PM Modi, in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said that he would also be spending the day with Army troops at the border, as he has been doing since he assumed power in 2014.

After coming to power in 2014, Modi had spent Diwali in Jammu and Kashmir’s Siachen with Army jawans.

In 2015, he had visited the Punjab border on the occasion of Diwali. His visit also marked 50 years of the 1965 Indo-Pak war.

The next year, Modi was in Himachal Pradesh where he spent time with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel at a border outpost.

He had spent his fourth Diwali as prime minister with soldiers at Gurez in Jammu and Kashmir last year.
