A tenth standard student from IB School Pathways in Noida, who was shown being slapped in a video that surfaced on social media on Thursday, has suffered partial hearing loss. The incident took place on 4 September.

Three boys involved in the incident have been suspended. The boy who slapped the victim has been suspended for a month and two others have been suspended for two weeks, a Hindustan Times report said, quoting school director Dr Shalini Advani.

Boy Under Stress After The Incident

The video of ‘slapping’ went viral on social networking sites, mostly Facebook and WhatsApp, on Thursday. The 26-second-long video shows four boys in a washroom inside the school premise. One of them says the video was being recorded for a ‘Snapchat story’. One of the boys slaps the victim, after which he appears to be in intense pain.

In a complaint letter to Principal Sunanda Sandheer, the boy’s mother writes: “We are writing you this email in respect to the incident that took place with my son (name withheld), within the school premises and within the normal school timings, on 4.09. 2017 around 14:00 hours. The incident has been recorded on video where it can be clearly seen that few students of the school have surrounded my son, and one of them is recording the whole incident on his phone for the purpose of “snapchat story”. It can be further seen that our son is under great deal of stress and fear and is helpless for so many students have surrounded him”.

She added that it resulted in “intense mental, physical and emotional trauma for the victim.” He also alleged that the school authorities did not provide “emergency medical aid/first aid” to his son.

School Says the Incident Was Not Bullying

The school authorities, however, have refused to label it as an incident of bullying.

“This is a rather unfortunate incident. However, this is not a bullying incident. It is the outcome of a consensual peer 'slap bet' episode that a few Pathways School Noida students had between themselves. Pathways School Noida has been swift in responding to the situation and has taken appropriate action with involvement of parents of the students involved,” said Advani.

She has further stated that the boys will make a public apology and they have already written apology letters to the boy and his father.
