1. 2012 Delhi Gang Rape Convicts a Step Closer to Gallows After SC Upholds Death Penalty
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed petitions by three death row convicts in the 16 December 2012 gang rape and murder case seeking a review of its May 2017 judgment upholding the death penalty awarded to them.
The case, in which a 23-year-old paramedical student lost her life after being brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in the capital, led to an unprecedented public outcry over crimes against women and catalysed sweeping changes in the laws covering sexual assault.

2. Supreme Court to Begin Hearing Pleas Challenging Section 377 Today
The legal arguments against Section 377 that will be heard by a constitution bench of the Supreme Court beginning Tuesday will quote from a range of references, including Hindu philosophy and past judgments of the Supreme Court itself.
The five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra will hear petitions challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. The law criminalizes non penile-vaginal intercourse, even between consenting adults. While everyone is covered under the law, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community are particularly affected.

3. Proposed Jio Institute Gets Eminence Status With IITs and IISc
The central government Monday awarded Institution of Eminence (IoE) status to three public and three private institutes — IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), BITS-Pilani, Manipal Academy of High Education, and Reliance Foundation’s proposed Jio Institute in Navi Mumbai. The University Grants Commission (UGC) approved six names against the promised 20 slots. The government’s formal notification is expected soon.
The Union Cabinet had approved UGC’s Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities Regulations 2017, on 3 August 2017. The regulations are aimed at creating an enabling architecture for 10 public and 10 private institutions to emerge as world-class institutions, since the country has little representation in the international ranking of educational institutions.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson quit on Monday over Prime Minister Theresa May’s plans to leave the European Union, the second resignation in a day, leaving the British leader’s Brexit plans in crisis.
After a day when the eurosceptic foreign secretary cancelled meetings for crisis talks at his official residence in central London, Johnson decided to walk from his job – hours after May’s Brexit minister David Davis did the same.

5. Setting Stage for Trade Talks, India, South Korea Launch Biggest Samsung Mobile Factory
South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics Monday inaugurated what it said is the world’s largest mobile factory that will have a capacity of 120 million handsets a year — nearly double the current 68 million — under a phased expansion by 2020.
Samsung said it has invested around Rs 5,000 crore to increase the capacity at the manufacturing plant, where it will fabricate devices ranging from low-end smartphones that cost under $100 to the company’s flagship S9 model. The capacity increase is in line with Samsung’s plans to expand production that will help it compete with its Chinese rivals in the Indian market.

6. Sack Jayant Sinha & Giriraj Singh, says Congress
Alleging that instances of mob lynchings have gone up by 400 percent in the past four years, the Congress on Monday demanded action against Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha for garlanding eight men convicted of lynching a meat trader, and Union Minister Giriraj Singh for meeting riot accused in a Bihar jail.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari also said his party would raise the issue in the forthcoming monsoon of Parliament if the Prime Minister doesn’t sack them or the if ministers don’t step down.

7. Days After Wife Alleged Threat to Life, Gangster Munna Bajrangi Shot Dead Inside up Jail
Hours before he was to be produced in court, Uttar Pradesh gangster Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi was shot dead inside the Baghpat Jail Monday by another gangster Sunil Rathi. The killing, which Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called “serious”, took place a week after Bajrangi’s wife had alleged that her husband’s life was in danger.
The incident had senior UP officials rushing to Baghpat and the CM ordering a probe even as four jail officials were suspended. Bajrangi (51), who was named in 24 criminal cases, including murder and extortion, was to be produced in a local court on Monday in an extortion case for allegedly demanding money from former BSP MLA Lokesh Dixit in 2017.

8. ED Lists Mallya’s Assets for Seizure Under New Law
Nearly 36 months after investigating agencies launched action against fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, the law seems to be catching up with him.
The Enforcement Directorate is ready with a list of 10 immovable assets worth close to Rs 2,000 crore, besides deposits and shares amounting to about Rs 10,500 crore, for confiscation under the newly promulgated Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance.
On an application moved by the Directorate, the Special Court has already issued a notice under the Ordinance directing Mallya to appear on 27 August.

9. ‘Cong. Will Go Into Poll Mode From 2 October’
The Congress party would go into the election mode from 2 October with its rank and file going on a door-to-door campaign and collecting funds from the public and the cadre, former Chief Minister of Kerala and AICC general secretary incharge of Andhra Pradesh Oommen Chandy indicated here on Monday.
Chandy began an Assembly constituency-wise review meeting in Krishna district here. He would conduct the meetings with leaders of the 13 districts over 14 days spending one day for each district and two days for Visakhapatnam in three visits till 28 June.
