Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family were spotted playing cricket with former India captains Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin at Modern School in New Delhi on Thursday, 22 February.

The visit was a promotional event for Canada’s very own first franchise-based Twenty20 league, Global T20 Canada, which is set to take off in July, this year.

Global T20 Canada is conceptualised, designed, developed and managed by Mercuri Group with Cricket Canada, the official governing body for the sport in the country. The league has also gained official sanction of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

With this announcement, Cricket Canada becomes the first Associate member of the ICC to set in motion a Twenty20 franchise league in the lucrative North America market.

Canada’s first family, who are on a week-long visit to India, had gone to the historic Jama Masjid earlier in the day. The Canadian prime minister, with his wife and three children, had spent nearly 30 minutes on the premises of the Old Delhi monument.

On Wednesday, Trudeau met Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. He also offered prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
