Afghan President Ashraf Ghani held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 19 September. A host of issues, including regional security and the developmental partnership between the two neighbours, were expected to be discussed.

The Afghan President spoke to PM Modi on initiatives by his government towards peace and reconciliation and also in confronting the challenges of terrorism and extremism in Afghanistan.

PM Modi also reiterated India's support to an Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process that would enable Afghanistan to continue as a united, peaceful, inclusive and democratic nation.

Ghani and PM Modi further reviewed and assessed the progress of the strategic partnership between the two countries. They also expressed determination to strengthen connectivity, including through Chabahar port and air freight corridor.

Ghani arrived in India on Wednesday morning on a day-long visit. He held talks with Modi in the afternoon, and attended a civic reception hosted by the India Foundation before heading back, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The visit comes just days after India and Afghanistan agreed to enhance cooperation under the New Development Partnership initiative, following which New Delhi had announced taking up 116 “high impact community developmental projects” in the war-torn country.

The decision to scale up cooperation and collaborate on infrastructure and high impact community development projects had been taken at the third meeting of the Joint Working Group on political and security cooperation between India and Afghanistan in Kabul last week.
