TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim along with the image is false. The image is not at all related to the ongoing JNU protest, it dates back to 2005. According to a website called jafariyanews.com, the image is from Lebanon when the country observed Ashura in 2005.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

On doing a reverse image search, The Quint came across a ‘Shia news’ website called jafariyanews.com that had uploaded the viral image on 20 February 2005.

The article titled ‘Ashura observed with blood streams to mark Karbala tragedy’ mentions that different countries including Iraq, United States, Canada, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, Turkey, Syria and Lebanon commemorated the killing of Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

According to the website, the viral image is from Ashura which was observed in Lebanon. The Quint has not been able to verify the origin of the image independently. However, it is definitely an old image and is not related to the ongoing JNU protest.
