The outcome of the recent Assembly elections in Karnataka has sent the country into a political frenzy. While the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single-largest party in the state with 104 seats to their name, they still fell short of the required number of 112 to form the government.

Further, while the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) passed the ‘magic number’ by forming a post-election coalition, the governor called the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa to take oath as the state’s new chief minster, giving the party a period of 15 days to prove a clear majority.

However, after protests and pressure from the Opposition, a special bench of the Supreme Court requested a floor test be conducted in the Karnataka Assembly at 4 pm on Saturday, 19 May.
