Senior Cong Leader & Former Union Minister Jaipal Reddy Dies at 77

He was recently diagnosed with pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital, where he died at 1.28 am on Sunday.

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister S Jaipal Reddy died at a hospital in Hyderabad in the early hours of Sunday, sources close to him said. He was 77.

He was recently diagnosed with pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital, where he died at 1.28 am, a Congress leader told PTI.

Reddy has been a parliamentarian for several decades and held key portfolios in various governments. He was a four-term MLA, member of Lok Sabha for five terms and member of Rajya Sabha for two terms.

The Congress, in a tweet, said it was saddened to hear of the passing of Reddy.

Tributes Pour In

PM Narendra Modi condoled Reddy’s demise and said he was “respected as an articulate speaker and effective administrator.”

Reddy was the information and broadcasting minister in the IK Gujral government as well as during the UPA-1 regime.

In UPA-2, he was assigned the urban development ministry. Later, he became the minister of petroleum and natural gas but was shifted to the science and technology and earth sciences ministries, creating a political storm.

The President of India described Reddy as “a thinking person’s politician.”

Congress MP and leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences at Reddy’s demise.

UPA Chairperson and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has written a condolence letter to Lakshmi, wife of Jaipal Reddy.

Reddy's funeral will take place in Hyderabad on Monday, the sources said. Congress' Telangana unit chief Uttam Kumar Reddy also described the party veteran as an outstanding orator, great human being and intellectual giant.

TRS working president K T Rama Rao, son of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, also condoled the death.

Congress MP and senior leader described Reddy as “one of the most decent, dignified, well-read and learned men in Indian public life.”

Congress MLA Randeep Surjewala wrote that he was “extremely saddened” at Reddy’s demise and spoke of his “impeccable honesty in administration.”

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao paid their last respects to the senior Congress leader at his residence on Sunday.

Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai also fondly remembered his interactions with Reddy.
