Even as actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth increasingly talk politics and openly hint at their political entry, Kamal’s brother, Charuhasan, has spoken out, doubting the political success of both the stars.

“I don’t think Rajini or Kamal stand much of a chance in politics,” lesser-known actor-director Charuhasan told Thanthi TV, adding that even if Kamal and Rajinikanth started a party together, they wouldn’t get more than 10% of the votes.

According to my calculations, the vote share for both of them, together, will be less than 10%. 90% of votes will go for politics, not cinema.

When interviewer Rangaraj Pandey asked if there was scope for both of them to start a party, Charuhasan said he had no idea.

Tamil cinema holds a legacy of people from the industry becoming formidable politicians, which includes former Chief Ministers MG Ramachandran, M Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa. However, Charuhasan said that they didn’t get votes because people were crazy about their films. “If they had, Jayalalithaa wouldn’t have lost twice,” he said.

If you want to be successful in politics, you don’t just need the name, fame, and the stardom that cinema gives you. You need something more. And only people know what that is, even I don’t know.

Kamal Haasan recently announced his interest in joining politics, and has met several political leaders since. Rajinikanth, too, has hinted at joining politics.

Kamal met with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In an interview with The Times of India, he said that he wouldn’t mind joining hands, even with the BJP, if some good came out of it for the people.
