On the afternoon of 9 November, Ummar Khan along with his two acquaintances – Tahir and Javed – left home to purchase cows from Rajasthan's Dausa district. The same evening, while they drove back home with their cattle, they were attacked allegedly by cow vigilantes.

Ummar Khan was killed after being allegedly shot by the attackers in Alwar's Govindgarh village while the other two escaped, reported Indian Express.

Back home in Bharatpur's Ghatmika village, Ummar's pregnant wife Khurshidan told IE that he wanted to buy a cow so that they could provide milk and ghee to their eight kids.

Ummar and his family come from a village of dairy farmers who survive by selling milk in nearby towns. He even worked as a labourer or in the fields of his family's land.

Ummar's devastated father, while speaking to IE, asked, "We want justice, how can they kill my son like this."

Two were arrested in connection with the incident and a few others have been identified, but late Ummar and Tahir both have cases slapped against them.

Alwar Superintendent of Police told IE that there are 5-6 cases against Tahir, including abduction and Ummar had been absconding in a case since 2012 under the Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act.
