NCRB: Kerala Proves to Be a Hotbed of Criminals, Ranks Highest

The NCRB data released on 30 November ranked Kerala highest in terms of the conviction rate with 3,19,033 people under custody being convicted of the crime they had committed.

Incidentally, Kerala also recorded the highest rate of IPC crime, which covers crimes that aren’t governed under special acts of law. People of Kerala also tend to report more cases for investigation than other states, thereby ranking them at the top of the table.

Speaking to TOI, state police chief Loknath Behera expressed his pride at the state being ranked topmost with respect to number for cases being registered for investigation.

The NCRB Data had also ranked Kochi and Kozhikode in the top 10 cities with maximum IPC crimes.

We do not believe in bunking. We register more number of cases every year than the combined figures of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

India has seen a rise in crime since 2014, the national crime rate which has gone from 367.5 in 2014 to 379.3 in 2016 , according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on 30 November.

Uttar Pradesh recorded 9.5 percent of the total cases of crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9 percent), Maharashtra (8.8 percent) and Kerala (8.7 percent).

Joint Director in the NCRB Surendra Panwar said a total of 48,31,515 cognisable crimes comprising 29,75,711 Indian Penal Code crimes and 18,55,804 special and local laws crimes were reported in 2016, showing an increase of 2.6 percent over 2015 (47,10,676 cases).
