‘We Need Help’: Nagaland CM Appeals to Centre Amid Heavy Rains

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday, 28 August, appealed to the Centre to help the flood-affected state, where incessant rains since July have led to a loss of twelve lives, and damage to public infrastructure, Hindustan Times reported.

CM Rio had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for immediate interim Central assistance on 1 August as well.

“More than 4000 families have been evacuated, deprived of basic amenities and immediate requirements”, the video Rio shared says. The state government has also demanded Rs 219 crore as immediate help, the Hindustan Times report stated.

Temjen Toy, Chief Secretary, Nagaland told Hindustan Times that the damaged was unprecedented.

The North-east however, has witnessed a deficient in rainfall this year. Citing data from the Guwahati Meteorological Centre, the Hindustan Times report stated that till 29 August, Nagaland has seen 26 percent deficient rainfall. Assam has seen 30 percent deficient rainfall, Meghalaya 43 percent shortfall, and Manipur 68 percent.

The shortfall was a part of “normal variation of the monsoon”, DS Pai, the head of the climate research division at the India Meteorological Department, told Scroll.in.

Nagaland has been receiving unprecedented heavy rainfall which has resulted in several natural calamities all over the state. Landslides and sinking zones have created immense damage to life and property all over the state.
