Days after a 21-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by 10 men in Ludhiana, the police department on Sunday, 17 February, dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector Vidya Ratan from the service.
Earlier, the ASI – who was the investigating officer at the police station when the victim's friend approached him – had earlier been suspended for negligence, reported Hindustan Times.
Mullanpur Dakha station house officer (SHO) Rajan Parminder Singh was transferred and sub-inspector (SI) Jarnail Singh, who was the duty officer at the police station on the day on the incident, was suspended for negligence.
“Inspector Jagdish Kumar Sharma has replaced Parminder Singh, who was shifted to police lines, as Mullanpur Dakha SHO. He (Parminder) was responsible for every action or lack of it being the SHO,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Rural, Varinder Singh Brar told Hindustan Times.
Six men – Ajay and Saif Ali (Ludhiana), Jagroop Singh (Ludhiana), Surmu (Ludhiana), Sadiq Ali of Rehpa village in SBS Nagar, and a juvenile from Kathua in Jammu – have been arrested in the case so far.
What Had Happened?
On 9 February, the woman was travelling with a man from Ludhiana to Issewal village when their car was stopped in Jagraon by men on three bikes, Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Tarun Rattan had said.
The men – who had been following the car – dragged the two out of the car and took them to a vacant spot on the banks of a canal, where they raped the woman, police said.
The woman has alleged that the accused men asked for a ransom of Rs 1 lakh to free them after raping her and when no one turned up, the accused returned the keys and fled from the spot, reported The Times of India.
