1. Two Cyclones Form in Arabian Sea; City May Get Rains on Weekend

The simultaneous formation of two cyclones in the Arabian Sea is a never-before-seen weather event, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. The weather bureau was referring to Cyclone Kyarr, which recently brushed past the west coast and recurved towards Oman, and cyclone Maha, which developed over the past 24 hours. Under the influence of cyclone Maha, the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, is likely to get isolated very light to light showers between Friday and Saturday, the weather bureau said.

Super cyclone Kyarr and cyclone Maha developed over the past 10 days in quick succession (one followed by the other with cyclone Maha attaining cyclone status on Thursday).

The Shiv Sena on Thursday upped the ante over its power-sharing deal with saffron ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the Maharashtra government. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray renewed the party’s demand for equal sharing of posts and responsibilities, including chief ministership.

Thackeray also expressed displeasure over CM Devendra Fadnavis’s earlier statement that the BJP never conceded equal sharing of the CM’s post with its ally. Earlier, the BJP made it clear that the CM’s post will not be shared with the Sena as part of the deal.

The state government has directed the district collectors to start conducting panchnamas for the damage, which would enable them to ascertain the total crop loss across the state.

Union home minister Amit Shah has assured governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari that a team from the Centre will soon be sent to the state to assess the losses. The assurance was given after the governor called up Shah to apprise him about the damages.
