1. 14-Month-Old Girl Raped by Grandfather in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh’s reputation as an unsafe place for girls took another hit with police saying that a 14-month old girl was raped by her grandfather (father’s uncle) in Vidisha district.

The assault on Saturday, 14 July, is the latest in Madhya Pradesh which has been rocked by the rape of minors being in Mandsaur, Gwalior and Satna in the past one month.

Lateri police station sub-inspector Banwarilal Malviya said that the incident took place on Saturday night, 50 km from the state capital Bhopal. The accused Gajraj Singh Bhil (38) had gone to his nephew’s place and on the pretext of playing with his grand-daughter, he took her some distance away and then sent her back to her home with one of his brothers around half an hour later.

2. Delhi Police Arrests Husband of Air Hostess Who Allegedly Killed Herself

Three days after 39-year-old flight attendant Anissia Batra allegedly jumped to her death from the terrace of her home in south Delhi’s Panchsheel Park, the police on Monday, 16 July, arrested her husband, who has been accused of harassing her for dowry.

Mayank Singhvi was arrested on Monday evening after an hour of questioning.

His wife’s family had earlier alleged lapses and laxity in the police probe.

In the first information report (FIR), Singhvi’s parents, too, have been accused of harassing Anissia, but the police said there was not enough evidence to arrest them.

3. Woman ‘Harassed, Given Triple Talaq After Giving Birth to Girl’; Husband Booked

An FIR has been lodged against a Kairana resident on the basis of a police complaint filed by his wife, accusing him of harassing her and giving her triple talaq after she gave birth to a baby girl.

The woman’s in-laws, who have also been booked, allegedly started harassing her and demanded a motorcycle and cash after she gave birth ten days ago.

The FIR was registered at Kairana police station Friday against the husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law of the complainant, Shadima, under IPC sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), police said.

4. Terrorists Kill Cop at Kashmir Politician's Home, Escape with Rifles

A policeman was killed and another injured when terrorists attacked a police post outside the home of a National Conference leader in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama on Monday afternoon.

The terrorists fired indiscriminately at the policemen and escaped with their rifles. The policeman killed in action was identified as Mudasir Ahmad. The terrorists had targeted the home of National Conference leader Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir.

Early investigations suggest the attack was carried out by the Zahoor Thokar group of the Hizbul Mujahideen. Terrorists in Kashmir often target police posts to steal weapons and ammunition. Pulwama is in South Kashmir, considered a hotbed of terrorism in the state.

5. Teen Kills Friend for Cellphone to Clear Debts, Arrested

A teenaged boy burnt his minor friend to death at nearby Adibatla for getting his cellphone to clear his debts, police said.

G Prem Sagar (19) hatched the plan to kill his 17-year-old friend, an intermediate student, to clear his financial debts, they said.

On July 13, he took the boy on his bike to an isolated spot at Adibatla after purchasing some petrol, hit him on the repeatedly on the head with a stick till he fell unconscious, doused him with petrol and set him ablaze, police said.

6. 200 Parents Protest Outside School over Girl’s ‘Rape’

Two days after a complaint was registered over the alleged sexual assault of a three-year-old girl at a prominent school in Greater Noida by a swimming pool lifeguard, the school administration faced protests from the child’s parents as well as guardians of other students.

SP Gautam Buddh Nagar Ashish Shrivastava said, “The girl’s parents have expressed their wish to press charges against the school principal as well. They said they will submit evidence against her. Once that is done, we will decide the course of action.”

7. 2 Kill Ola Driver for Not Sharing Booze

Two men, who killed an Ola driver for not sharing alcohol with them, were arrested.

Nandini Layout police cracked the murder case of Kpini Gowda alias Kumar, an Ola driver, who was found dead in his cab on 17 May and arrested his friends Mallikarjuna and Mahalinga.

A senior police officer said that the accused murdered Kumar on 17 May and placed his body in his car and fled from the spot. Since he was sleeping inside the car after locking the doors and raising the windshields, the police assumed he died due to suffocation and registered a case of unnatural death, said DCP (North) Chethan Singh Rathore.

8. Out to Buy Air Tickets, Deputy Bank Manager ‘Duped’ of Rs 1.5 Lakh

A 57-year-old deputy bank manager of a nationalised bank was allegedly duped of Rs 1.5 lakh by two people on the pretext of booking air tickets. The police said the complainant had called on a number she had found online to inquire about travelling to the US.

Utkarsha Nadkarni, a resident of Dadar, told the police that she wanted to visit her daughter Tanya in the US in September, and had called on a number found through a search portal. “I got a call from a man named Vikas who claimed to be employed with one Sai Travels. He said that he could help me book tickets at cheaper rates,” she told the police.

9. 'Peeping Tom' Killed by Friend

A 'peeping tom' was killed by his friend for allegedly looking into the bathroom where his mother was bathing at Serlingampally area in Hyderabad, police said.

The 23-year-old man was stabbed to death by his friend, who also slit his throat, after they had a couple of drinks last night, they said.

Though the victim's brother rushed him to a hospital on being informed of the incident, he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

After stabbing his friend, the cab driver surrendered before police.

The man told police that he had caught his friend in the act last month, police said.
