3. Ishrat Jahan Encounter Case Discharge Order: ‘CBI Itself Believes Vanzara and Amin Were Doing Official Duties’

In its order discharging former police officers D G Vanzara and NK Amin in the alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others, the special court said that it appeared that the investigating agency CBI “itself believed” that the actions of the accused (Vanzara and Amin) were part of their official duties.

The court arrived at this conclusion due to an absence of endorsement or note of the CBI on the government’s denial of sanction to prosecute the two former police officers. “Considering the original orders of the Government of Gujarat, it appears that there is no endorsement or note of the CBI on the original orders with regard to its future course of actions. Considering the approach of the CBI, it appears that the CBI itself believes that action of the applicant accused was in discharge of his official duties,” judge JK Pandya said in the order.

5. Lioness Found Dead in Gujarat's Gir Forest

A lioness was found dead in Tulsishyam range of Gir forest in Gujarat, an official said on Friday.

The carcass of the lioness, around two years of age, was found Thursday evening near a small river in Tulsishyam range of Gir-East division, an official said.

Primary investigation has revealed the lioness was killed in a territorial fight among the big cats to establish dominance in the area, said Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Junagadh, DT Vasavada.

"We found canine teeth and nail injury marks on the animal's body, which suggest the lioness died in a territorial fight between big cats," said Vasavada, adding the carcass has been sent for post mortem.

Since February this year, four cubs, two lions and one lioness have been found dead in the Gir forest.
