Lalu Prasad Yadav’s sister Gangotri Devi died of a heart attack on 7 January, a day after the former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD chief was sent to jail in the fodder scam case.

Lalu is expected to miss the cremation ceremony of his 75-year-old sister, scheduled to be held at Chakarpani village in Gopalganj district. Survived by two sons and a daughter, Devi resided in the servants quarters of the Patna Veterinary College, where Lalu lived for a long time.

Rabri Devi and sons Tej Pratap and Tejashwi reached Gangotri's residence upon hearing the news of her death, reported The Telegraph.

‘Could Not Bear the Shock of Lalu’s Sentence’

The Yadav family claimed that Lalu’s elder sister could not bear the shock of his jail sentence. On 6 January, a special CBI court awarded Lalu three and a half year jail term in the fodder scam case.

Her cousin Ramanand Yadav told The Telegraph:

She was very closely attached to Lalu ji, and was depressed about his jail sentence... The doctor has said it was a heart attack that took her life.

"Gangotri was very attached to Lalu ji, and had been praying for her brother’s release since the day he was convicted,” Rabri Devi told The Telegraph.
