1. Bengal Claims High Court Stay On Grilling Of Calcutta Police Chief

The CBI on Monday declined to accept in Calcutta High Court the Bengal government’s claim that there was a high court stay on the agency’s move to question Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha case.

Appearing for the CBI, additional solicitor general Kaushik Chanda and the agency’s panel lawyer Chandreyee Alam opposed the state’s claim and said the court had never issued any such stay.

The government, represented by advocate general Kishor Dutta, had moved the court of Justice Shivakant Prasad to draw his attention to the CBI’s “illegal raid” on Kumar’s residence on Sunday evening.

2. Police-CBI Face-Off Shifts From Calcutta Streets

The CBI and Calcutta police continued to outwit each other, though silently, on Monday.

The police served a summons on CBI joint director Pankaj Srivastava seeking his presence for examination in connection with a case registered with Bhowanipore police station against some officers of the agency by a trader in Hooghly.

On the other hand, the CBI top brass in Calcutta held a meeting at Nizam Palace here with those officers who had gone to police commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s residence on Sunday and sent a detailed report to Delhi. A list of Calcutta police officers who “resisted” the CBI move on Sunday were named in the report.

3. Mamata Govt Functions From Roadside Police Outpost

The Bengal government on Monday functioned from the Metro Channel — the venue of chief minister’s Save India dharna — and top government officials had to shuttle between Nabanna and the temporary seat of power.

The most important government programme held at the Metro Channel was a cabinet meeting to approve the state budget tabled in the Assembly later in the day.

The cabinet meeting is held twice a month at Nabanna or at the Assembly building when the House is in session. But on Monday, Mamata Banerjee and her ministers held the cabinet meeting at the police outpost near the agitation venue.

4. Now, Cops Send Notice To CBI Officer In ₹45L Cheating Case

A day after the CBI’s bitter showdown with the Kolkata police, the latter served a notice on the senior-most officer of the agency in the eastern zone, Pankaj Srivastava, asking him to appear for questioning in a five-month-old Rs 45 lakh cheating case involving a Kolkata businessman.

This came hours after the CBI dragged the Kolkata Police to the Supreme Court filing an interim application seeking directions for the cops to cooperate with its probe into the Saradha chit fund cases.

5. CRPF Cocoon Around Salt Lake, Nizam Palace Offices

Employees of various central government offices inside Nizam Palace on AJC Bose Road and the Central Government Office (CGO) Complex in Salt Lake were surprised to find personnel in camouflage fatigues guarding the premises instead of Kolkata Police officers.

What came as a bigger surprise was when the CRPF personnel, armed with assault rifles and batons, asked many of them to produce identity cards before entering the main gates of the two complexes.

6. Hawkers Reap Fringe Benefits Of Stand-Off

People came streaming in through the day to raise the protest pitch at Metro Channel on Monday but an unassuming group seemed to make most of the ongoing CBI-state stand-off. The hawkers in the Esplanade area made some quick bucks in the last 24 hours as supporters and onlookers doubled up as potential shoppers.

It all started when the hawkers on the stretch from Cottage Industries Emporium to Lenin Sarani were about to wind up on Sunday. Seeing a huge contingent of people arriving, most decided to keep their stalls/shops open to cash in on the opportunity. Finally, no one complained when they wound up around midnight, only to come back and open shop by 8am on Monday, at least two hours before schedule.

7. Ex-IPS Officer Bharati Ghosh Joins BJP

Former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh on Monday joined BJP in the presence of Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and party leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy.

“The BJP family continues to grow in West Bengal. I welcome former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh to the party,” said Vijayvargiya, party leader in charge of West Bengal.

A Supreme Court bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan will take up Ghosh’s anticipatory bail plea on 11 February. The bench had on 1 October 2018 stayed her arrest until her plea was disposed of. In February 2018, a Midnapore trial court had issued an arrest warrant against Ghosh in a gold-for-cash scam that happened allegedly during her stint as West Midnapore SP.
