Hours after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday, 23 June, questioned the “dangerous spurt in serious crimes” in the city, Delhi Police countered his claim with data.

In a tweet, Delhi Police said, “No such increase in crime in Delhi. Overall heinous crimes down by 10 percent this year compared to 2018.”

They also added that heinous crimes committed against senior citizens too has gone down by 22 percent “due to preventive efforts of Delhi police.”

Referring to the murder of an elderly couple and their domestic help in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Vihar, Kejriwal had questioned the safety of Delhiites in his tweet.

Kejriwal wrote,

“Delhi is witnessing a dangerous spurt in serious crimes. An elderly couple and their domestic help murdered in Vasant Vihar. Nine murders reported in last 24 hours across the city. Whose door should be knocked for safety & security of Delhiites?”

The bodies of an elderly couple identified as Vishnu Mathur (78) and Shashi Mathur (75) and their caretaker Khushbu Nautiyal (24) were found with their throats slit at a house in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar on Sunday morning, 23 June.

Vishnu had retired from the office of the Central Government Health Scheme and Shashi from a civic body in New Delhi. They had been living at Vasant Apartments for nearly 18 years.

Responding to Kejriwal’s criticism, Delhi police said that they have vital leads in the murder case.

Ever since Kejriwal has come to power in Delhi, there has been an ongoing tussle over the control of services between the state government and the Central government and Lieutenant Governor.

Kejriwal has been demanding full statehood for Delhi, citing difficulties in carrying out its work due to undue interference by the Centre.
