Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government has made sweeping changes to the Indira Awaas Yojna. According to media reports, the initiative will now be called Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana.

This is the first time that the programme has been renamed. The Indira Awaas Yojana scheme was launched by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985. It was created as a social welfare initiative by the Indian government to provide housing for the rural sections of the country.

In addition to the change of name, the Modi government has increased the amount which can be approved for this housing scheme. According to the report, people falling in line with the Yojana are now entitled to benefits of up to Rs 1.20 lakhs which was previously limited to Rs 70K only.

But that’s not all, the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana also enables people to loan up to Rs 70,000 of their entitled amount, while Rs 12,000 are now provided to construct toilets in the household.

All these provisions fall in line with Narendra Modi’s Swachch Bharat Mission and Abhiyan.
