1. Domestic Help Hides Phone in Bathroom to Shoot Videos, Arrested

A 20-year-old domestic help was arrested on Wednesday, 23 May, for allegedly recording a video of his employer’s wife, by hiding his iPhone below the washbasin in the bathroom.

According to police, the complainant is a resident of Andheri and has two male servants. The accused servant works in the morning shift and the second one comes in the afternoon, after the first one has left.

The accused, a resident of Versova, has been working for them for the past one year.

2. Life for Raping Live-In Partner’s Minor Daughters, Impregnating Them

A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court on Thursday, 24 May, sentenced a 35-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping his live-in partner’s two minor daughters on multiple occasions and impregnating them.

According to the complaint filed with Kala Chowki police station in Mumbai by the victims’ mother, a housemaid, she had been in a live-in relationship with the accused since 2008. The complainant had lost her husband, and a year later she had met the convict.

The woman said in her complaint that the convict used to assault her and harass her. On one such occasion on 24 March 2017, the convict tried to sexually abuse her 15-year-old younger daughter, but she resisted.

3. Man Held at Delhi Airport for Smuggling 1 Kg Gold by Hiding It in His Rectum

A man was arrested at Delhi airport by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country about one kilogram gold by hiding it in his rectum.

The accused was intercepted on his arrival from Bangkok on Wednesday, 23 May.

“A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 998 grams of gold, equivalent to Rs 31.04 lakh, which the passenger had concealed inside his rectum,” a statement issued on Thursday, 24 May, by the customs department said.

During questioning, the passenger admitted that he had smuggled three kilograms gold valued at approximately Rs 93.32 lakh during his past visits, it said.

4. Delhi: Father-Son Duo Arrested for Rs 28-Crore GST Evasion

A father-son duo has been arrested by GST officers for tax evasion of Rs 28 crore, marking the first arrest in the national capital under the new indirect tax regime.

The Shahdara-based duo was held on Thursday, 24 May, for issuing invoices fraudulently, a Finance Ministry statement said. The arrest was made by the Central Tax, GST Delhi, East Commissionerate.

The case involved "fraudulent issuance of Input Tax Credit invoices involving evasion of approximately Rs 28 crore relating to copper industry," the ministry said.

5. Man Mistaken for Child-Lifter Beaten to Death

A fake WhatsApp video which peddled fear by claiming an out-of-state gang was stealing children has claimed its first casualty. A 26-year-old youth was beaten to death by a group of enraged men who mistook him for a child-lifter. Police identified the deceased as Kaluram, who hailed from Rajasthan and suspect he is a paan seller.

The police control room received an alert at about 1.40 pm on Wednesday, 23 May, that a man was being kicked and beaten with wooden logs by a group of men near Ranganatha talkies in Pension Mohalla under the jurisdiction of Chamarajpet police.

6. Journo Plays Sleuth, Catches Crook in Burglary

Deciding to play detective after the police failed to make headway in a burglary in Old Pallavaram in Chennai, a journalist with a fortnightly Tamil magazine helped solve the case, nabbing the key suspect on Wednesday, 23 May, despite facing a knife attack.

The Pallavaram police on Thursday, 23 May, said Aravind, 36, who lives in the locality where the crime took place, apprehended Rosaiah, 26. They have arrested Rosaiah and are now searching for his accomplices, Mohan and Sanjay.

Investigators said the burglars struck on Tuesday, making away with cash, valuables and sundry goods, including a 32-inch LCD television and a computer monitor, from six shops and commercial establishments, including Aravind’s friend’s office in Old Pallavaram.

7. Engineer Held for Staying in Hotel & Not Paying Rs 3 Lakh Bill

Asad Rizvi, the 43-year-old engineer arrested for allegedly cheating an NGO worker of Rs 3 lakh and several others by posing as an IB or ED officer, stayed at a plush hotel in Lucknow by claiming to be the son of the Gorakhpur district magistrate.

The accused allegedly stayed at the hotel with a woman accomplice, who is on the run, police added. A case was registered by the general manager of the hotel with Hazratganj police station after Rizvi and his accomplice failed to clear bills running up to Rs 3.04 lakh in 2016.

Police said the accused had given a cheque for Rs 3.04 lakh to the hotel, which allegedly bounced. “Rizvi allegedly introduced himself to the hotel’s owner as the Gorakhpur district magistrate’s son. He didn’t pay for his stay and fled,” the police said.

8. Thane: Man ‘Kills’ Neighbour for ‘Creating Disturbance’

A man allegedly beat his neighbour to death for ‘creating disturbance’ while he was talking to his wife on the phone in Bhiwandi near Mumbai on Wednesday, 23 May. The accused is on the run, police said.

According to sources, the incident occurred at Kailashnagar in Bhiwandi. “The accused, identified as Ashish Jaiswar, was talking to his wife on phone. His neighbour, Sanjay Rathod, was allegedly making a lot of noise, because of which he couldn’t talk over the phone,” said an officer.

9. Sunanda Pushkar Death Case Transferred to Designated Court

A Delhi court on Thursday, 23 May, transferred the Sunanda Pushkar death case, in which her husband and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has been charge-sheeted for abetting her suicide, to a special court designated to try lawmakers.

Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmendra Singh transferred the case to Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal, who will take up the matter on 28 May.

"Since he is a sitting Member of Parliament, matter is being sent to the special designated court for politicians, that is ACMM Samar Vishal. Matter be taken up on 28 May," the court said.
