1. Army Major Involved in Human Shield Row Detained with Woman at Srinagar Hotel

Major Leetul Gogoi, the Rashtriya Rifles officer who shot to fame after tying a Kashmiri civilian to the front of his jeep to perceptibly prevent stone-pelting attacks, was detained by the police on Wednesday, 23 May in circumstances that are still unclear.

Also detained with him was a woman and a local man. The woman was initially suspected to be a minor but the police later confirmed she was over 18 years of age. They, however, did not share details on her age.

According to the police, they were summoned to Grand Mamta Hotel, where Gogoi had booked a room in his own name (the booking had been done online). The two locals came to the hotel and asked to go up to Gogoi’s room and got into an altercation with the hotel staff when they were not allowed. The hotel staff called the police.

2. 4-Yr-Old Raped and Brutally Assaulted by Young Relative near Mumbai

A four-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted and raped by her 19-year-old relative in Uran, a coastal town in Raigad district around 48km from Mumbai city, on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 5pm, and the accused, whose name has been withheld to protect the child, was arrested later the same day, the police said.

“The accused is related to the child and lived next door. Her mother had gone to the market at the time and the child was playing outside her house when the accused took her to his house, where he brutally assaulted her and then raped her. He also strangulated her and hid her under mattresses,” said Nagraj Mazge, senior police inspector of Uran police station.

3. Man Kills Girlfriend Asking for Marriage, Father and Friends Help Him

Nearly five months after the body of a 15-year-old girl was recovered from the fields of Mohiuddinpur in Meerut, the Ghaziabad crime branch arrested five persons, including girl’s boyfriend and his father, for the murder.

The girl was a Class 9 student from Modi Nagar, Ghaziabad.

The crime branch on Monday arrested prime suspect Sumit Kumar, 21, his father Ramesh, 60, his friends Arif, 21, and Rajeev, 26, and driver Sonu, 26, whose Swift car was hired to take the girl to Meerut to execute the murder.

Kumar alleged he had planned the murder as the girl was forcing him to marry her. He also suspected that she was dating other boys.

4. Uttar Pradesh: Local BJP Leader Arrested on Rape Charges

A local BJP leader was arrested for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of offering her a job in Varanasi on Tuesday, 22 May. Kanhaiya Lal Mishra, the former president of the BJP’s Bhadohi district unit, was arrested on Tuesday after a 32-year-old woman alleged he had sexually assaulted her in a lodge in Sigra area. “A case has been registered under sections of rape and threatening against Lal and he has been arrested. Investigations are underway,” IG Varanasi Deepak Ratan said.

The alleged incident occurred late afternoon on Monday. Police said the woman alleged in her complaint that Lal had asked her to visit him in a lodge where he said his relatives would discuss work options with her.

5. Two Held for Manufacturing, Selling Fake HUL Products

Two more people have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing and selling forged cosmetic products and infringing the copyright of the multi-national firm Hindustan Unilever Limited.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch arrested Devshi Rabari (38), a native of Kutch district, on Tuesday and Rajkot resident Dharmendra Parmar (46) on Sunday. The police said that both the men owned stationary shops.

They allegedly conspired with the main accused, Mumbai-based stationer Abdul Wahab Sayyad, to manufacture fake Pond’s cream and Lakmé eyeliner and printed packaging material bearing the HUL brand name and logo.

6. Four Journos Among 6 Booked for Extorting Money from Foreigner

Kodaikanal town police, in Tamil Nadu, have booked six people, including three television reporters and a print journalist, for allegedly extorting money from a foreign national running an NGO on Kodaikanal hills. Based on a complaint from the woman, the police registered a case and are conducting an inquiry.

Police sources said that the six-member group recently approached Patti Anne Tower, managing trustee of Aeon Centre of Cosmology run by Aeon Trust at Pethuparai on Kodaikanal hills.

7. Bawana Cracker Factory Blaze: Owner’s Son Held

Four months after 17 workers of a cracker factory in Bawana were killed in a massive fire, crime branch has arrested the son of the owner on Tuesday, 23 May.

Police officers said that Rinku Jain, son of the main accused Manoj Jain, had allegedly locked the factory doors few minutes before the fire broke out.

He fled when he heard the explosions, leaving the workers to fend for themselves.

8. 2 Held for Murder of Dalit Man in Ghaziabad

Two persons were arrested on Wednesday, 23 May, in connection with the death of a Dalit man at Naifal village here in a suspected case of caste enmity, the police said.

Ajay and Raju were held from Kazipura area. Two 315 bore country-made pistols and three live cartridges were seized from their possession, Assistant Superintendent of Police Aparna Gautama said.

The 40-year-old Dalit man was shot dead on 17 May allegedly by five bike-borne assailants.

9. Throat-Slit Body of Nurse Recovered in J&K Hospital

A 23-year-old nurse was on Wednesday, 23 May, found dead with her throat slit at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) hospital in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said.

A murder case was registered against her male colleague, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who was also found in a serious condition near her body inside the laboratory of the super speciality hospital at Kakryal, Reasi Senior Superintendent of Police Tahir Sajad Bhat told PTI.

Hospital spokesperson Man Mohan Harjai said Vishali, who hails from Himachal Pradesh was on night duty at intensive thoracic unit (ITU) of the hospital and at about 3.30 am took a break, after informing the concerned shift in-charge.
