1. Girl Shot Dead by Teacher for ‘Rejecting Advances’

A Class 8 girl was shot dead allegedly by her former schoolteacher in Kanpur Dehat district on Thursday as she rejected his advances, police said.

Accused Shailendra Singh (25), was expelled from the school two months after the victim had lodged a complaint against him with her school principal. Singh is currently absconding, police said.

Kanpur Dehat SP Anurag Vats said Singh had been stalking and making advances on the 15-year-old girl even after being expelled.

2. Four Get Five Years’ Jail for Dowry Harassment, Abetting Suicide

The Thane sessions court on Wednesday awarded five years’ rigorous imprisonment to four members of a family after the wife of the first accused committed suicide, alleging dowry harassment around six years ago.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them. In case they fail to pay the fine, they will have to undergo simple imprisonment for another month, the court said.

According to the police, the incident took place in September 2013. The main accused, Naresh Kothari, 41, and Indrakumari (then 36) had married around 14 years before the incident. The couple also had two kids aged 13 and seven (then).

3. Serial Killer ‘Cyanide Mohan’ Sentenced to Death in Anganwadi Worker Murder Case

Serial killer Mohan Kumar, known as ‘Cyanide Mohan’, has been sentenced to death in connection with the rape and murder of an Anganwadi worker from Bantwal in Mangaluru district in 2005.

The sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge Sayeedunnisa on Thursday handed down the death penalty to Kumar and directed the district legal services authority to pay compensation to the victim’s sister.

Kumar promised to marry the woman and took her to Bengaluru where he sexually abused her. The next day, Kumar gave her a cyanide pill after convincing her it is used for contraception. She was found dead at Kempegowda Bus Station in Bengaluru on 22 October 2005.

4. 3 IIT-BHU Students Arrested for Attacking Another with Rod

A student of IIT-BHU suffered a head injury in an attack by three other students on Wednesday night, police said, adding that all three assailants have been arrested.

Police said that Surendra Meena, a student of B.Tech fourth year at debasement of ceramic engineering, IIT-BHU, had a conflict with three students – Gajendra Meena, Piyush Yadav and Devbrat Meena – over a trivial issue few days back, after which they had manhandled him. On Wednesday night, they called him up and asked him to meet them in front of the SC day hostel.

According to the police, Surendra Meena claimed that when he reached there, all three accused attacked him with a rod and fled the spot when he fell unconscious. Other students present on the spot rushed him to the hospital.

5. Iqbal Mirchi Case: Fourth Accused Sent to Judicial Custody

Rinku Deshpande, the fourth accused to be arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged properties deal involving late gangster Iqbal Memon alias Iqbal Mirchi, was sent to judicial custody by a special in-charge court on Friday.

Deshpande was arrested on Tuesday by the ED claiming that she had played a crucial role in the land deal of three properties belonging to Mirchi, which were shown to be in the ownership of a Trust to evade attachment by authorities since he was declared an absconding accused.

6. Four Booked for Running Ponzi Scheme, Cheating People of Lakhs

Four people, who allegedly cheated a huge number of people of lakhs by promising high rates of interest of the latter’s investments, were booked by the APMC police on Thursday. None of them has been arrested.

According to the police, the accused had taken money from the victims saying the money would be invested in ‘non-governmental’ establishments. They had also assured that the victims would get 1% interest of their investments every day for the next 200 days.

After they would get back their capital amounts. And if they were interested, they could again invest the capital amount in some other schemes for another 200 days, which would give even higher interests.

7. Over 29,000 Mongoose Hair Paint Brushes Seized, 15 Held

The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has seized 29,166 paint brushes made from mongoose hair in simultaneous raids across multiple locations in Maharashtra on Thursday. The raids were part of a nationwide operation, ‘Clean Art’, which is the agency’s effort to control the hunting of the species for fur.

The WCCB has roped in multiple central agencies, like the Central Bureau of Investigation, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Forest Department, India Post, state police departments, a Mumbai-based NGO named Wildlife Welfare Association, and held capacity-building, target-identification and verification exercises between October 1 and 21.

8. Kalyan Resident Beats Drunk Neighbour to Death

A Kalyan resident was arrested for allegedly beating to death a drunk neighbour after an altercation in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said. Vikas Vinod Sharma, 31, was abused on Thursday morning by Afsar Imam Sayyed, 55, who was drunk at the time, said an official.

“Sharma beat Sayyed and banged his head against a wall. On hearing the commotion, Sayyed’s wife came out and, along with others, rushed him to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” the official said. Sharma, a resident of Balyani in Kalyan, was charged with murder, he added.

9. Foreigner Among 3 Held for Hacking Bank Accounts, Transferring ₹10 Crore

The Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh (UP) anti-terrorism squads (ATS), in a joint operation, arrested three people, including a Nigerian national on Thursday night, for allegedly hacking into several bank accounts across India and transferring around ₹10 crore.

The accused, Peter Herman Assenga and Arjun Ashok Kharade, along with Nigerian national Chinweuba Emeka Michael, would transfer the money into the accounts of depositors of a bank in Nepal, and then re-route the money to India. The accused used the modus operandi to prevent the money trail from being exposed.
