1. 16 Booked, 8 Held for Gumla Lynching

Jharkhand Police on Monday booked 16 people and arrested eight of them, including two tribal priests, in connection with the Gumla lynching case in which four elderly persons, two among them women, were lynched on suspicions of practising “witchcraft”.

Police suspect two tribal priests were main conspirators of the crime.

Four persons in their 60s, including two women, were killed by around a dozen angry villagers, who dragged them out of their houses and attacked them with sticks and sharp weapons while accusing them of practising “witchcraft” at Siskari in Jharkhand’s Gumla district on Sunday.

2. Bike Bot Official, Who Liaised for Firm, Arrested in Noida

A 35-year-old man, alleged to be one of the officials responsible for the Bike Bot scheme, was arrested on Saturday. The man, identified as Adesh Bhati, a relative of kingpin Sanjay Bhati, allegedly used to liaise on behalf of the company—Garvit Innovative Promoters Limited (GIPL) — which allegedly floated the Rs 1,500 crore ponzi scam.

He was arrested when he returned from Manali, where he had gone into hiding, the police said.

Deepak Chaudhury, a Bike Bot investor in Dadri, alleged that Adesh used to convince investors and collect their money. “He was not named in the first FIR filed in February. While other office bearers fled, he tried to manage the situation and distributed some cheques to protesting investors to pacify them. However, those cheques bounced. Adesh fled when an FIR was filed against him in June,” Deepak alleged.

3. Muslim Man ‘Beaten Up’ for Not Chanting Jai Shri Ram in Bengal, 1 Arrested

One person has been arrested in Birbhum’s Paikar area for allegedly beating up a 35-year-old Muslim man after he reportedly refused to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

Ismail Sheikh, who sells spices for a living, had lodged a complaint with police, alleging that he was beaten by one Gautam Mondal at Kushmor village on Sunday when he went to sell spice there.

“I had gone to Kushmor village to sell spices on Sunday when a man accosted me and asked me to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. I told him that every person has the right to follow his religion, and therefore I did not chant the slogan. When I refused to chant, he started beating me up. Later, I left the spot. He thrashed me again when I was returning home,” Sheikh, a resident of Bhadista area of Birbhum district, told The Indian Express.

4. Jailed Youth Dies, Cop Who Arrested Him Booked, Judicial Probe Ordered

After a 20-year-old man, who was sent to jail on Saturday for allegedly selling illicit liquor, died on way to a hospital in Mainpuri on Sunday, police have booked a sub-inspector, who had arrested the youth on Friday, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

A judicial inquiry into the death is ongoing, police said.

According to the police, the autopsy report said that “ante-mortem injuries” was the cause of the death of Vinay Kumar alias Chhotu and he had 17 internal injuries with his liver being damaged.

5. Two Held for Stealing Man’s Bag and Phone at IFFCO Chowk Metro Station

Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing a man’s bag after indulging him in small talk and promising him to get a confirmed train seat to Bihar through a friend, said the police

According to the police, the incident took place on July 19 at 12.30pm when the victim, Virendra Kushwaha, a resident of Kakrola village, was waiting at the Iffco Chowk Metro station and planning to take a train to his home town in Bihar. The police said two men approached him and told him that they were also going to their village in Bihar and he could tag along with them.

6. Mastermind Behind String of Armed Robberies in City Held

The alleged kingpin of the group behind more than 50 cases of armed robberies in the capital was arrested from UP’s Rampur, police said. According to police, Burhan Ahmed (23) jumped into a sewage drain after spotting officers and was nabbed from Pakka Bag on Sunday. Two of his associates were arrested earlier.

According to DCP (Special Cell) Manishi Chandra, a team led by Inspector Shiv Kumar chased Ahmed as he moved to Ajmer Sharif dargah, Bharatpur and Rampur. “Ahmed had asked his associate to arrange a new room for him in Rampur. Police eventually found that he was travelling in a grey Swift. They spotted it at a workshop,” said an officer.

7. DMK Functionary Hacked to Death in Tuticorin; Enmity in Party Suspected

A DMK executive member V S Karunaharan, 64, was hacked to death by an unidentified gang in Kulayankarisal village, Tuticorin district late on Monday evening. Pudukottai cops attached to the Tuticorin district police station said that the victim was returning home when he was hacked to death.

“Though there are various angles to the murder, it is primarily suspected to be an outcome of enmity within the party (DMK). Four special teams have been formed to nab the six persons whom we suspect to have a hand in the murder. The actual motive will come to light when they are nabbed,” superintendent of police, Tuticorin District, Arun Balagopalan said.

8. Youth Held for Assault on Muslim Man, Forcing Him to Chant Slogan

The crime branch of the city police has arrested one of the suspects who was allegedly part of a mob that assaulted a Muslim youth and forced him to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' early on Friday morning. It was a Hindu couple that came to the rescue of the youth.
The accused has been identified as Ganesh Vinod Sonawne, a 21-year-old resident of N-13, Bharatnagar. He was produced before the holiday court on Sunday, following which he has been remanded in a day's police custody.

During the preliminary probe, police have found that the accused already has a criminal record. They are trying to obtain his complete record from police stations across the city.

9. Tuition Teacher Arrested for 11-Year-Old’s Rape in Jind

Police here on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl he used to give home tuition to.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) at the women police station, Santosh Devi, said they had received a complaint alleging that the accused raped the girl when she had gone to his home for tuition. “The girl has been medically examed. A probe is on,” said the ASI, who is the investigating officer. She said the accused had been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
