Former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa's aide Sasikala was brought to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka from Central Jail after she complained of fever on Wednesday, 20 January.

The hospital reportedly said:

“Shashikala, 63, with comorbidities of hypertension, diabetes and hypothyroidism has been admitted with cough and fever. Her condition is stable with supportive measures, antibiotics and oxygen. She will be further evaluated and monitored.”

On Tuesday, Sasikala’s lawyer had confirmed to The Quint, that she will be released from the Parappana Agrahara Central prison in Bengaluru on the morning of 27 January.

This will mark the end of Sasikala’s four-year prison term in a disproportionate assets (DA) case. Sasikala will be released after she pays a Rs 10 crore fine.

Previously, advocate Raja Senthoor Pandian had told that Sasikala’s – convict number 9234 – release had been delayed due to the lockdown imposed in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

The possibility of Sasikala, the ex-aide of former CM Jayalalithaa, re-joining ruling party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) seems bleak. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had told, "No chance for that. She is not in the party at all...100 percent she will not be admitted. AIADMK is now functioning after clearly deciding on this. There is no different opinion on this.[sic]”

He added that a memorial for Jayalalithaa would be inaugurated by him on the same day that Sasikala is being released.

In February 2017, the Supreme Court overruled the Karnataka High Court in the Tamil Nadu disproportionate assets case, and convicted Sasikala, and other co-accused, with four years of imprisonment in the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
