The shocking deaths of 11 members of a joint family shook the National Capital on 1 July. The register found at the family’s home reveals that the entire suicide was planned. More than that, there were specific instructions that were to be followed – it appears to be a kind of script to achieve moksh (salvation).

The family had apparently been planning the mass suicide for weeks, according to what is found in the register, say police sources. The police say they have questioned a few people based on the family’s call records.

Here is what was found written in register, as told by the police. It must be noted that nowhere in the register has the word ‘suicide’ been used.

Instructions found in register:

  • Choose Thursday or Sunday.
  • Blindfold oneself properly so that nothing is visible. Use a cotton dupatta with rope.
  • Worship at home daily for seven days.
  • If the elderly woman (referred as ‘Bebbe’) cannot stand, then she can do it while lying down on the bed.
  • Dim the lights inside the room.
  • If there is spare cloth from tying hands, it can be used around the eyes.
  • Cloth used to tie the mouth can be doubled up with a handkerchief.
  • The more gratitude and reverence you show, the better the results will be.
  • The work should be done between 12 and 1 at night. Prior to this, the family should perform havan (Hindu ritual).
  • Everybody should think the same way. More than ever before. After this, the work ahead of you will begin rapidly.

An analysis of the register revealed on Tuesday, 3 July, that the notes were written by Lalit Bhatia (45), the second son of Narayan Devi (77).

A police officer told Hindustan Times that Bhatia “wrote about dreaming about his father who died years ago.... He would attribute all the ritualistic activities to ‘upar se aadesh’.”

The report added that Lalit Bhatia also wrote about his illness in third person – “Lalit ke swasthya ki chinta mat karna...mere aane se prabhaav padta hai.”
