Six people died after a boat capsized in the Narmada river in Maharashtra's Nandurbar district, police said on Tuesday, 15 January, reported PTI.

According to news agency IANS, police said that 34 people have been rescued so far. Around 50 people boarded a boat and went into the river to perform Makar Sankaranti rituals when the tragedy struck, said Nandurbar Police Control official Balasaheb Gaidhani.

Local villagers rushed in to help and managed to pull out 39 victims, six of whom were dead.

A massive search is on as several people remain missing in the deep river waters, said Gaidhani.
