The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru police, on Saturday, 26 October, arrested 30 Bangladeshi nationals. The arrests come days after Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced the creation of a database of illegal immigrants and overstaying citizens in the state.

According to the CCB, these Bangladeshi nationals were found living in the city without any visas. They have been booked under The Foreigners Act, 1946 and they will be deported in the coming days.

The CCB is yet to share the details of the arrested people.

Bommai had earlier proposed an Assam-like NRC project in the state. Addressing the media on 3 October, he had said,

“Karnataka is one of the states where across the border people are coming and settling down. There are lot of issues here. Therefore we are collecting all the information, we will discuss (NRC) with the Union Home Minister and then go ahead.”

Later, the government set aside the plans for NRC and decided to create a database of illegal immigrants and overstaying foreign citizens.
