1. Five Medical Students Held for Ragging Dalit boy
Police have arrested five final-year MBBS students for allegedly ragging a first-year Dalit student in ESI Medical College, Rajajinagar. Karan Sharma of Rajasthan, Gautham of Madhya Pradesh, Rahul Jha of New Delhi, Shubhav of Uttar Pradesh and Indrajit of Uttarakhand were arrested on Wednesday, 26 December.
Police said that the alleged incident took place around 10 pm on 24 December at the college hostel. The accused entered the junior’s room and slapped him. The miscreants took their junior to the terrace and cut his hair. They abused him by invoking his caste. They were allegedly ragging him for several days.

2. 12,000 Cops to Ensure Safety During NY Festivities
The police have made elaborate security arrangements across the city to handle crowd during the New Year celebrations. This follows an alert by the intelligence bureau over Wednesday’s arrest by National Investigation Agency in Delhi and other parts of the country.
The police personnel will watch local miscreants during the New Year’s Eve. Ten teams have been formed to monitor rave parties on the city’s outskirts.
T Suneel Kumar, the police commissioner, said adequate security arrangements are put in place to ensure the safety of people, especially women and children, during the New Year celebrations. Tight security has been deployed around malls and shopping complexes and areas such as MG Road, Brigade Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, UB City, IT Corridors, he said.

3. 120 Students Fall ill After Allegedly Eating Rotten Food in Hostel
Over 100 students from Chikkaballapura district in Karnataka were hospitalised with what doctors have diagnosed as food poisoning, after eating food from their hostel mess.
Around 120 resident students of Chikkaballapura BGS Hostel were taken to the government hospital on Thursday, 27 December following complaints of stomach pain, nausea, and loose stools after having eaten food served at the hostel mess.
“All the students are recovering well. They are being treated with IV fluids and oral rehydration solution (ORS) to control the dehydration, all are responding well,” said District Health Officer Dr Ravi Shankar to TNM. “As of now, a team of officials have been sent to the hostel and are taking samples of the water and food. These will be analysed and we will be able to confirm what caused so many students to fall ill.”

4. Hampi Voted as top Asian Travel Destination
A panel consisting of five of the world’s top travel influencers and bloggers has voted Hampi as one of the top emerging Asian travel destinations for 2019. The awards were published recently on the website TravelLemming.com, which focuses on emerging and off-the-beaten path travel spots around the globe.
Winners for the Asian awards were selected by an expert panel consisting of five of the best renowned travel bloggers and influencers in the world, with a combined following on social media of over 7,50,000, the TravelLemming said in a statement. Other top five destinations in Asia, voted for the awards are Sri Lanka, Oman, Bhutan, Mongolia and Niseko in Japan.

5. Factionalism Returns to Haunt Congress
The Congress may have won a major battle with its Cabinet expansion nipping in the bud BJP’s move to poach MLAs and bring down the coalition government but, grappling with dissent and factionalism, the party is yet to win the war.
The delay in the portfolio allocations was indication enough that all is not well within the party as two top leaders in the state Congress — deputy chief minister G Parameshwara and Congress legislature party leader Siddaramaiah — are locked in a power-sharing tussle.
After the Cabinet expansion on 22 December, it took the Congress five days to finalise the portfolios for new ministers. The delay, party sources said, was because of the standoff between Parameshwara and Siddaramaiah over cornering the largest share of portfolios for their supporters and retaining the most powerful ministries.
