A man alleged that his relative was denied treatment at King George's Medical University (KGMU) hospital in Lucknow on Wednesday, 24 October, under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, despite holding all required documentation.

The man’s relative was reportedly told by the doctors to “go to Prime Minister Narendra Modi” if they did not have money for the treatment, ANI reported.

The patient had reportedly come to the hospital from Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

The victim, identified as 28-year-old Kamlesh, had been electrocuted three days ago, Times Now reported.

The relatives had rushed Kamlesh to the district hospital from where they were referred to KGMU.

Meanwhile, Santosh Kumar, the media in-charge at KGMU refuted the claims.

“We were among the first hospitals to implement the Ayushman Bharat program. Action will be taken against the doctor.”
Santosh Kumar, Media Incharge, King George’s Medical University, to ANI.

Tilhar MLA Roshan Lal also expressed displeasure with the KGMU administration over the matter. He said that he would raise the issue in the Legislative Assembly, Navbharat Times reported.

Slated to be the largest healthcare scheme in the world, Ayushman Bharat aims to provide a coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family annually, benefiting more than 10.74 crore poor families.

In addition to the insurance plan, the government aims to open 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres by 2022, which would be equipped to treat diseases including blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.
