3 Women Accuse Assam Police of Torture, 2 Cops Booked

The three sisters were picked up by the police in relation to a kidnapping case against their brother.

Two Assam police personnel were booked on Tuesday, 17 September, for allegedly stripping, assaulting and torturing three women at a police outpost in the state's Darrang region.

One of the three women was pregnant and is reported to have suffered miscarriage after the incident, Hindustan Times reported on Wednesday.

The HT report says that police addressed the complaints of the women after they talked to the media about their plight and alleged that the police did not act for eight days.

The HT report quoted Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia as saying that a criminal case has been registered against the police personnel under relevant sections - the outpost in-charge and the woman constable present. He further told the daily that both have been put under suspension as well.

Saikia said that the delput inspector general has been asked to look into the matter.

According to the HT report, one of the woman said that she had filed a complaint with Darrang SP Amit Bhuyan on 10 September. It said that she, her two sisters and her husband were stripped naked and beaten by the two police officials - Mahendra Sarmah, the police post incharge, and Binita Boro, the woman constable.

The four were picked from there house on 9 September and taken to the Burah outpost in Assam’s Darrang. 

One Sister Hit on Disabled Leg, Pregnant Woman Hit on Stomach, Claims Complainant

The woman narrated the accounts in her complaint. She was quoted by HT as saying that the outpost in-charge put a pistol to her head when asked what the detention was about. She said that they stripped naked her younger sister, who is disabled in her left le,g and hit her with a baton on the same leg.

The elder sister, who was assaulted second, kept telling the police that she was pregnant. “They hit me on the stomach. I have had a miscarriage," she was quoted by HT as saying.

The report also states that there are visible marks of torture on their bodies.

The sisters were finally released after their brother arrived with the woman who he had eloped with. The case against the brother was registered on 6 September. The SP has, according to the report, refuted claims that he did not act upon the complaint. He said that he instituted an inquiry on 11 September.
