In an unprecedented move, starting 18 January, Air India will begin reserving six seats for women on every domestic flight.

The seats will be reserved in the front rows for women passengers’ safety, and will be allotted without any extra charges.

We will be reserving the third row — six seats — in the economy class of the aircraft for female passengers travelling alone. We feel, as national carriers, it is our responsibility to enhance comfort level to female passengers. There are a lot of female passengers who travel alone with us and we will be blocking a few seats for them.
Meenakhi Malik of Air India told The Hindu

A former Air India executive director Jitendra Bhargava called the step "misplaced priority."

Planes are not unsafe for women passengers. In case of unruly behaviour, the airline crew are authorised to take action as per the law.

D Sudhakara Reddy, National President of Air Passengers Association of India called it an “impractical move".

This will lead to gender discrimination. The airline should not go ahead with the plan.
