But What is The Naga Accord?

On 3 August, 2015 the Modi government announced that an agreement with the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland had been concluded. This came after nearly two decades of peace talks to end insurgency in Nagaland.

According to an NDTV report, the Naga leadership gave up its demand for integration of the Naga inhabited areas under a single administration. They had even resolved to accept the primacy of the Indian Constitution.

Putting RaGa's Tweet in Context

In January, however, 11 parties including the ruling Naga People's Front had decided to refrain from contesting the polls slated to be conducted on 27 February in Nagalnd. This had been demanded by tribal bodies and civil society groups in order to resolve the Naga political problem first, reported NDTV.

On 25 January, Rh Raising, the steering committee leader of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah faction) went on to equate election with slavery, reported The Indian Express.

When we say solution, we don’t an mean election… Election is the anti-thesis of solution. Solution is about the future of the Nagas, whereas election is about the Indian Constitution.

Rahul Gandhi's tweet comes a day after BJP announced that it would contest the upcoming Nagaland state elections together with the Nationalist Democratic People's Party.
