New Delhi, Dec 3 (IANS) The Maharashtra government on Monday moved a caveat in the Supreme court urging it not to pass any order on any petition challenging its recent law granting 16 per cent reservation in education and jobs to the politically influential community.
"No order be passed in the above mentioned matter without notice to the undersigned. The caveator was the authorized party who issued the Maharashtra Act No. LXII of 2018 dated 30.11.2018," said the brief plea entering caveat.
The Maharashtra Assembly had on November 29 unanimously passed the Bill granting 16 per cent reservation in education and jobs to the politically dominant Marathas.
The Bill was passed unanimously without any discussion.
The State Backward Classes Commission (SBCC) had submitted its report to the state government on November 15, recommending 16 per cent quota for Marathas under the SEBC category, without disturbing other existing quotas.
Accordingly, they became entitled to the quota benefits under Articles 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution.
