Kolkata, Dec 3 (IANS) Popular singer Kumar Sanu, who had joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2012, on Monday denied giving consent to participate in the BJP-organised "Rath Yatra" programme in the state and alleged that including his name is a 'conspiracy'.
"The party people have made some list, but before adding my name I should have been informed. People of Kolkata love me so I think this is a conspiracy. But I am not coming...it is not possible as I did not have any discussions about it," the singer said.
The saffron outfit is scheduled to hold three Rath Yatra rallies on December 7, 9 and 14 from north Bengal's Cooch Behar, South 24 Pargana district's Gangasagar and Birbhum district's temple town Tarapith, respectively.
Sanu said he was not a BJP member anymore.
"I had joined BJP in 2012 thinking my music school will get some help. I got no help for the schools that I run in different cities for orphan kids, so I had withdrawn from the party," Sanu remarked.
He said that he has made it clear several times that he was not associated with any political party, the only thing he was concerned about was music.
BJP state general secretary Sayantan Basu said the party wanted him to come as he was still a member of the party.
"We have no idea why he is not coming or is denying his membership and under whose pressure. But we wanted him to come so we had approached the Centre for it," Basu said.
