18-year-old Rekha, who left home two years ago to escape child marriage, secured 90.3% in her PU examinations.

Two years ago, Rekha V left her home in a Karnataka village after her mother tried to force her to get married.

But the 18-year-old did not let that experience take her away from her dreams. Now, she has secured 90.3% in the recently announced II PU examinations, according to a report in The Times of India filed by Shrinivasa M.

A Rebellion

Originally from the Kotturu village in Chikkaballapura district of Karnataka, Rekha fled to Bengaluru with her friends after her mother, who works as a domestic help, pushed her to get married.

At first, she joined a computer training centre in Hebbal, but soon realised it wasn’t her calling. She then called the child helpline 1098 seeking help in continuing her academic journey.

After moving her to a trust in Mathikere, the child welfare committee also helped her secure a seat in a Government PU College in Nelamangala, a town in the Bangalore Rural district.

After studying hard for two years, Rekha was able to secure 542/600 in the PU examinations, while scoring a hundred in History. She now wants to pursue a BA in history, economics and political science.

PU examinations, or pre-university courses (commonly known as 10+2), are conducted by state education institutions or boards all over India.
