There could now be simultaneous elections to the Parliament and State Assemblies, as the Election Commission (EC) has supported the idea in a letter to the Law Ministry, according to The Indian Express.

This is the first time the election commission has formally expressed its go-ahead to conduct Lok Sabha and state polls together.

In so far as the Election Commission is concerned, the issues involved in holding simultaneous elections are not insurmountable for it. If there is political consensus and will across the board, needless to say that the Commission supports the idea of considering simultaneous elections

The EC’s words are interesting, coming as they do against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for concurrent polls to panchayats, urban local bodies, states and the Parliament in March.

The BJP in its manifesto had also promised conducting simultaneous polls to the Parliament and state assemblies in 2014.

The EC, though, has flagged multiple challenges that will have to be overcome before it can prepare to hold state and central elections together.
