1. Mumbai Police Launch High-Level Probe Into CSMT Bridge Collapse

The Mumbai police have initiated a high-level enquiry into the collapse of the CSMT FOB on Thursday evening that killed six and left nearly three dozen commuters injured.

The complainant, Sanjay Mohan Kamble, senior inspector of MRA Marg police station, registered a complaint against the Railways and civic officials under various sections of IPC at Azad Maidan police station late Thursday night. Sources told mid-day that Zonal DCP Abhishek Trimukhe has been asked to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.

Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar on Friday declared candidates for 39 of the 48 seats in the state for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state.

He also finally ruled out any alliance with the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) combine.

For the remaining seats, Ambedkar said, “In the next four days, suspense over these seats would be over”. He blamed the Congress for its failure to tie up with the VBA and said now the fight is between the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance and the VBA.

Central Railway officials said they stood “vindicated” after BMC chief Ajoy Mehta instituted an inquiry into the collapse of the FOB connected to CSMT, which killed six persons and injured 31. The collapse of the foot overbridge, used by thousands of commuters daily, had given the Central Railway a steady stream of social media brickbats since Thursday eventing despite the railwaymen claiming that the FOB belonged to the BMC.

4. Mumbai Teachers Demand Salary Hike, to Protest on 22 March

The Opposition on Friday sharpened its attack on the Shiv Sena and BJP, with NCP president Sharad Pawar demanding a “white paper” on the health of all the bridges in Mumbai. State Congress president Ashok Chavan, meanwhile, said the Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had become a “hot bed for corruption” and demanded that the Mayor and Civic Commissioner be sacked immediately.
