With heavy rains lashing Mumbai in the past three days, the useful water content in the seven lakes supplying water to the city rose on Sunday to 10.89 lakh million litres — 75% of the total capacity of 14.47 lakh million litres — from 8.37 lakh million litres on Thursday.

According to data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the percentage of useful water stock in the seven lakes was around 57% of the total capacity on Thursday, which rose to 64% on Friday, followed by 69% on Saturday, and finally, 75% on Sunday.

2. BEML to Deliver First Set of Rakes by 2020

First set of Metro rail rakes will be ready and delivered to Mumbai metro by July 2020. However, mock-up coaches for Metro rakes will be delivered in September. Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has the contract to manufacture the trains for Metro corridors in Mumbai.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has given a Rs 3,015 crore contract for rolling stock to BEML.

3. Sena Denies NCP’s Poaching Charges: ‘Aim Is to Win Hearts’

Shiv Sena on Monday responded to allegations by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar that the ruling alliance was misusing state and Central agencies to “poach” leaders. The Sena said that it does not arm-twist political leaders into joining them but “wins hearts” instead.

On Sunday, Pawar had alleged that the state and Central governments were misusing investigating agencies to coerce political leaders from the opposition to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of Assembly elections.

4. Dawood’s Nephew, Two Aides Booked Under MCOCA

The anti-extortion cell (AEC) on Monday invoked provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s nephew, Rizwan Kaskar and two of his associates. Kaskar along with Ahmedraza Afroz Vadhariya, 24, and Ashfaq Rafiq Towelwala, 34, were produced before the special MCOCA court on Monday and have been remanded in AEC’s custody till August 5.

The trio were arrested on July 17, for allegedly threatening a city businessman with whom they had a financial dispute.

5. Motilal Nagar Revamp to Give Mumbai 40,000 Cheap Homes

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority’s (Mhada) plan to redevelop the 128-acre Motilal Nagar in Goregaon will generate 40,000 affordable houses, which will be distributed through a lottery. Apart from rehousing 3,628 existing residents in 1,200-sqft new houses, the Rs. 30,000-crore project will include a women’s hostel, a children’s home and two small hospitals.
