1. MNS Won’t Contest Lok Sabha Polls, First Time Since Its Inception

The Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has decided not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This is the first time since the party’s inception in 2006 that the party has decided to refrain from contesting parliamentary elections in the state. MNS leader Shirish Sawant issued a statement in this regard on Sunday.

Thackeray will, however, hold a slew of rallies, including one on March 19 where he is likely to voice his support for the NCP.

Facing flak after the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) footbridge collapse, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has closed access to 11 bridges and footbridges that were declared “extremely dilapidated”. They are expected to be pulled down soon.

Six persons died and 31 were injured after a footbridge near CSMT over the busy D N Road collapsed on Thursday night. After the collapse, questions were raised about why the bridges declared dilapidated by BMC itself last year have not been pulled down yet.

Peter Mukerjea, one of the accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, will undergo an angiography at Sir JJ Hospital on Monday. Mukerjea was rushed to the hospital on Saturday evening after he complained of chest pain.

Doctors from the hospital said Mukerjea was experiencing chest pain for the past two-three days.

4. Three Years After ‘Killing Wife, Lover’, Merchant Navy Sailor Gets Bail

More than three years after a merchant navy sailor was booked for the murder of his wife and her alleged lover, the Bombay High Court, in a rare order, granted him bail as the trial against him has not begun.

Dhruvkant Thakur (29) allegedly murdered his wife, 25-year old Sushmita, and her alleged lover Ajay Kumar, on December 9, 2015, in his wife’s rented apartment in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai. Then, the prosecution claims, Thakur approached a neighbour and the building watchman, confessed to the murders and directed them to call the police. He has since been in custody.

5. Mumbai’s Engineering Colleges See Rise In Job Offers, Packages From IT Firms

After a two-year slump, the city’s engineering colleges are seeing a rise in offers and pay packages from information technology (IT) companies, with some even touching ₹40 lakh. While IT firms such as Accenture, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Infotech, Capgemini and Infosys are hiring students in bulk, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro opted for a pan-India centralised recruitment process.
