1. Milind Deora Is New Mumbai Congress Chief, Sanjay Nirupam Fielded From North West

The Congress party on Monday appointed Milind Deora, former party MP, as the Mumbai Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief.

The decision comes in the backdrop of intense infighting within the Mumbai Congress.

Milind Deora, in a very public post, had shared about the problems within the Congress' Mumbai unit. It's no secret that Nirupam and Deora have not seen eye to eye on a number of issues. Sanjay Nirupam had been at loggerheads with other party leaders as well.

Deora, the son of former oil minister Murli Deora, is considered close to the Congress chief.

In a relief to 95-year-old veteran actor Dilip Kumar, the Bombay High Court has set aside an order by Arbitration Tribunal asking him to secure property worth Rs 25 crore till the arbitration case was finally decided.

Justice BP Colabawalla, in a judgment on Monday, observed that the tribunal’s order amounted to converting Prajita Developers’ claim into a “secured claim,” even when it was only about seeking damages for a deal gone wrong.

The case pertains to redevelopment rights of the veteran star’s bungalow at Pali Hill. The deal was originally signed in 2006. However, unhappy with the progress, Kumar kept writing to the developers – two of them had partnered to fulfil the deal.

After weeks of bewilderment over lack of candidate from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat, the Congress seems to have found a taker in Urmila Matondkar. The actor met former city party chief Sanjay Nirupam on Monday and agreed to formally join Congress later this week, when her candidature could be announced. Later on Monday evening, Nirupam’s name was announced from the Mumbai North West constituency, as he had been trying for the past few months to shift from his original Mumbai North constituency, which he lost in 2014 to BJP’s Gopal Shetty by over four lakh votes.

Though a section of party leaders had objected to Nirupam changing his constituency, he was said to have Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s nod. According to sources, Nirupam’s ticket was kept on hold till the party found a formidable candidate from Mumbai North, which is one of the city’s five Lok Sabha seats; Congress had already announced candidates from three, except Mumbai North and North West, which were settled on Monday.

Mumbai North comprises Borivali, Dahisar, Magathane, Kandivali East, Charkop and Malad West assembly constituencies. Except Malad West, from where the Congress’s Aslam Shaikh is an MLA, all others are represented by either the Shiv Sena or the BJP.

In a powerful show of strength, Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) leader Prakash Ambedkar, accompanied by thousands of his party workers, filed his nomination from Solapur Lok Sabha seat on Monday. Ambedkar’s BBM has allied with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi to form the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi for the Lok Sabha polls.

On Tuesday, Ambedkar will also file his nomination from Akola.

The Congress has accused the BBM chief of avoiding the Congress-NCP alliance in order to indirectly help the BJP. They had even called the party “B team of the BJP”.

Ambedkar, however, brushed away the barbs. “Kutta bhonkta rehta hai, haathi chale apni chaal (The elephant keeps walking as the dogs keep barking).”

5. In a U-Turn, Sena to Give Palghar to BJP’s Gavit

Unable to find a formidable candidate from the Palghar Lok Sabha seat to take on Hitendra Thakur’s Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA), the Shiv Sena in a U-turn of sorts is set to give the ticket to the BJP’s sitting MP Rajendra Gavit. Gavit will, however, fight the Lok Sabha election from Palghar on a Shiv Sena ticket.

The move is being seen as a ‘facesaving exit’ for Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, who had made the seat a prestige issue and ensured it was allotted to his party during the seatsharing negotiations. The Sena was to give the ticket to Srinivas Wanga, son of the late BJP MP Chintamani Wanga, but Srinivas will now be given a ticket to fight the state Assembly elections instead. The Sena reviewed its decision after BVA entered the fray with the backing of the Congress-NCP combine as the Aghadi has considerable influence in the area.

The Sena also considered giving the ticket to Wanga’s wife, Jayashree, but a party functionary said that she wouldn’t be a formidable candidate against the BVA.
