1. Congress May Lose LoP Post in Maharashtra

The Congress could lose the post of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra assembly, with five of its legislators set to leave the party, according to people familiar with the developments.

Five legislators — current LoP Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, Abdul Sattar, Kalidas Kolambkar, Nitesh Rane and Jaykumar Gore — are expected to formally quit the Congress this week. Some of them could join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said the people cited above who asked not to be named.

2. MHADA: Over 66,000 Apply for 217 Houses, Lottery on 2 June

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has received as many as 66,078 applications for the 217 houses in Mumbai that will be allotted through a lottery, to be held on 2 June.

Of the 217 houses, 47 are for Middle Income Groups (MIG), while the remaining are for Lower Income Groups (LIG). A total of 46 houses are located in Powai, while the rest are located at Chembur’s Shell tower in Shahkar Nagar.

3.State Drafts Mental Healthcare Rules, Awaits Nod

Two years after the Mental Healthcare Act was passed, the state government has finally drafted mental healthcare rules which, for the first time, identify rights of mentally ill patients. The draft rules await the nod of the state health ministry.

As of now, the state government follows the Mental Health Act, 1987. In 2017, the new Mental Healthcare Act was passed and was enforced in May 2018. The new rules focus on patients’ rights, treatment infrastructure upgradation and rehabilitation of patients who have recovered.

4. High Turnout in Malabar Hill Worked in Sena’s Favour

The high voter turnout in the upscale Malabar Hill constituency seems to have worked in favour of Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant, who defeated Milind Deora from the Congress in the battle for the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat.

Malabar Hill saw a 52.15 per cent voter turnout, which was a percentage point higher as compared to 2014. Malabar Hill is one of the six Assembly constituencies which make up the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat.

5.1.75 Lakh Candidates to Take JEE-Adv Today

More than 1.75 lakh students across the country will take the Joint Entrance Exam-Advanced (JEE-Adv) on Monday. While the top 2.45 lakh students who cleared JEE-Main exam are eligible for JEE-Adv, 30% students did not register for the examination.

Last year, of the top 2.31 lakh JEE-Main eligible candidates, only 1.64 lakh candidates had registered for JEE-Adv.

In 2017, around 1.71 lakh of the 2.20 lakh eligible candidates had registered for the JEE-Adv exam.
