Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday refuted speculation that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would go solo in the upcoming Assembly polls.

There was speculation that the BJP may break off their alliance with the Sena, on the eve of the polls, in a bid to capture power in the state on their own. “Some people have been fanning speculation that now the BJP is preparing to contest the polls solo. Let me put those rumours to rest. We will contest with the Shiv Sena. Our alliance with the Sena and smaller allies is final. We will come back to power, riding on a huge mandate from people,” said Fadnavis, speaking at a function organised by the BJP to induct Opposition legislators into the party.

Three commuters on-board a Worli-bound Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus on Wednesday had a narrow escape when it caught fire around 4.15pm on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road at Matunga Circle.

Nobody was hurt in the incident. The cause of fire on the single-decker bus, on route number 27 from Vaishali Nagar in Mulund east, is suspected to be a short circuit in its electric board.

This is the second such incident on a BEST bus in the past three months, raising questions over commuters’ safety.

After getting a go-ahead from the Bombay High Court over the functioning of Tree Authority, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to start the work of widening of the Hindmata drain.

The civic body had planned to cut 52 trees coming in the way of the widening work near Parel to curb flooding in the Hindmata area. However, the work could not proceed on account of a stay on the functioning of the Tree Authority from court last year. The court lifted the stay on July 19 this year.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to appoint a man to the post of clerk-cum-typist in the City Civil and Sessions Court, after he was denied the same for failing to declare that he had not taken dowry from his wife.

A division bench of Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice S J Kathawalla said, “We do not think that this requirement can be enforced in such a manner that by mere failure to provide declaration counter-signed by wife, father and father-in-law, he could be denied the opportunity to serve the organisation, though he may have been found meritorious.”
