Continuing to protest against the BJP-led government over the rise in retail prices of petrol and diesel, the Congress on Thursday also dragged top Bollywood personalities into the debate.

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, who led a morcha over the hike in fuel prices outside the suburban Collector’s office, targeted actor Amitabh Bachchan. “In 2012, when the petrol rate was Rs 73 per litre, Bachchan had quipped that the people could just about afford enough petrol to burn their cars. The petrol rate now has climbed to Rs 85 per litre. Back in 2012, the price of crude oil in international markets had climbed to $ 148 per barrel which had fuelled the price hike. But currently, the crude oil price is $ 75 a barrell. Will Bachchan ask questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi now…” he asked.

2. Ladies-only Locals at Night and 24/7 Security

A large number of women commuters on Western Railway (WR) want ladies-only train services at night and round-the-clock security on all locals, a survey to determine safety concerns revealed.

Currently, eight such services are run on the network — four during morning peak hours and four during the evening rush. But there are no special trains for women at night and the reserved coaches are converted into general ones during late hours.

3. Builder Fined Rs 22 Lakh for Causing Road Cave-in

M Realty Constructions, the builder whose redevelopment project on Dubash Lane in Girgaum caused a road to cave in last week, has been asked by the BMC to pay a fine of Rs 22.91 lakh for repairing the damaged road and pavement.

On May 17, Mirror had reported that a century-old chawl on Dubash Lane had registered an FIR against the builder for allegedly putting their lives in danger. The underground parking at the proposed 18-storey Dariya Mansion had resulted in a gaping hole in the road, a few feet away from the three-storey chawl, called Contractor building.

4. 25-year-old Killed After He Rams Bike Into Crane in Mumbai

A 25-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after his bike hit a hydraulic machine parked on a road near Matunga.

The man, Ashish Ramesh Singh, a Parel resident, was driving rashly and lost control and hit the machine on Wednesday. The Matunga police registered a case and will investigate further.

According to the police, the accident took place at 12.25am on Nathalal D Mehta flyover, Matunga. Railway work was going on at the bridge and the hydraulic machine was parked with a barricade installed near it as a precaution.

5. Demonetised Notes Worth Rs 4.9 Crore Seized, 3 Detained

The MIDC police detained three people and seized demonetised notes worth Rs 4.9 crore in a raid on an Andheri hotel late on Thursday night.

According to the police, the operation was conducted by a team of MIDC police after a tip-off was received regarding two people who were holed up in the Marol Naka-based in Andheri (East). On reaching the hotel room, the cops found huge bags full of demonetised notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination.

6. Ashwini Bidre ‘Murder’ Case: Cops Shielding Accused Inspector, Says Family

The family of assistant police inspector Ashwini Bidre, missing since 2016, on Thursday said that agencies investigating her alleged disappearance and murder were shielding the accused police inspector Abhay Kurundkar and three others.

Bidre’s brother Anand and her husband Raju Gore raised several questions on the investigation process. “The secondary chargesheet has been filed and yet nothing concrete has been found. We haven’t even been informed what the chargesheet entails,” said Anand.

7. Mumbai Airport Expects Operations to Be Normal by June 2

The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) has said that with 80% of the instrument landing system (ILS) upgradation work having been completed, normal operations will resume by June 2.

ILS is a standard International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) precision landing aid that is used to provide guidance to aircraft to land on the runway under normal or adverse weather conditions. The work, being carried out from May 17 to June 5, will improve the precision while landing.
