1. Andheri School Sacks Teacher Convicted for Molesting Students

The management of an Andheri school, where a Maths teacher continued to teach despite being convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexually harassing students, finally sacked him on Monday.

Mirror had reported last week that the convict had resumed his teaching duties even after being convicted by a special POCSO court on August 13 and sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment. He obtained bail the same day. This paper has exhaustively covered the protracted battle that the school principal had waged against the management after students complained to her in 2013. After Mirror’s report last week, education department officials called the school authorities for a meeting on Monday.

Two years after reconstruction work was undertaken, the iconic Flora Fountain might soon be open for public viewing. Phase one, which includes the restoration of the statue, is expected to be completed by November-end with phase two set to be complete in February.

Since the work began in September 2016, the civic body has missed several deadlines leading the cost to increase by ₹15-20 lakh. Phase one was initially slated to be complete within six months. The primary reason for the delay was the unanticipated damage to the structure and the missing nose and neck of statue.

Sudarshan Shrisath, sub-engineer, heritage department, said, “When we started the work, we had not anticipated the extent of the structure’s damage.”
