1. Live Bomb Found at Metro III Site Explodes While Being Defused

On Wednesday evening, workers at a Metro III construction site in Mumbai Central made a rather explosive discovery. An old, live bomb was found at the site while digging was on. While the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) of the Mumbai Police immediately started to defuse the low-intensity explosive, there was a minor explosion during the process, sources told mid-day.

A senior police officer told that around 6.30 pm workers at the Metro construction site informed the police that they had found a suspicious object while digging, nearly one metre under the road surface.

2. Kamala Mills Fire: Three Arrested 1Above Pub Owners Sent to Police Custody Till Jan 17

All three owners of the Mumbai pub 1 Above, who were arrested in connection with the December 29 Kamala Mills fire that claimed 14 lives, were produced before a magistrate’s court on Thursday and sent to police custody till January 17.

Seeking their custody, the police said they wanted to question the owners of 1Above and Mojo Bistro together.

Kripesh Sanghvi and his brother Jigar Sanghvi -- on the run since the fire broke out -- were arrested from a hotel in Bandra late on Wednesday. The third partner, Abhijeet Mankar, was arrested early on Thursday morning, confirmed Mumbai police spokesperson Deepak Devraj.

3. British Spiritual Leader Who Raped, Cheated, Sexually Abused Female Follower, Held

A 42-year-old devotee of spiritual master Meher Baba was allegedly sexually abused, cheated and repeatedly raped under false promises of marriage by a UK-based spiritual teacher. When the survivor, who hails from Mumbai, approached the police to register a case against him, they allegedly failed to do so. She then approached the Judicial Magistrate's Court, First Class, which directed them to register the offence and investigate.

A complaint has been registered with Kasarvadavli police station against Wayne Smith, a native of Manchester in the UK, under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating). The police have issued a look-out notice against him.

4. Historian Seeks DNA Test on Shivaji's Ashes

Noted historian Indrajit Sawant on Thursday urged the state to conduct a DNA test on ashes and bones of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to debunk certain theories about the warrior king’s death in 1680.

Sawant, who has written 10 books on Shivaji, the Maratha Empire and other important figures, mailed the request to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

5. India's First State-Backed Job Placement Centre to Open in Mumbai Soon

Maharashtra will open the country’s first state-backed global skill development and placement centre soon. The project received a go-ahead from Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday.

The centre will prep youngsters to get jobs in various sectors overseas. Job seekers from Maharashtra and other states will be able to apply for skilled jobs at the centre, which will assist them in securing jobs.

The first centre will be set up in Mumbai; later sub-centres will open in Aurangabad and Nagpur, too.

6. A Clean Sweep for Dirty and Rocky Chimbai Beach

Chimbai beach, an idyllic strip of coast in Bandra that is now lost to boulders, garbage and encroachers, will get back its lost beauty like Juhu and Versova beaches.

On Thursday, the BMC kicked off a dedicated cleaning project at the beach outlining the fishing village of Chimbai. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, a Chimbaikar himself, wielded the broom to launch the cleanliness drive to restore the beach to its former glory after over five decades.

7. JP Morgan Chase Set to Take Over Ailing SevenHills

Global finance giant JP Morgan Chase is all set to take control of the loss-making SevenHills Hospital in Marol next week.

JP Morgan Chase, which has 49.9 per cent stake in SevenHills Healthcare, the company which runs the Marol hospital, has reportedly arrived at a deal with some other banks which had lent money to the hospital, allowing it to take complete control of the 1500-bed facility.
