The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday seized nine luxury cars and several paintings belonging to diamond jeweller Nirav Modi. The ED also froze Modi’s and his uncle Mehul Choksi’s investments in mutual funds and shares. The investments were worth Rs 7.8 crore and Rs 86.72 crore respectively.

The cars and paintings were seized from his Mumbai residence, Samudra Mahal, in Worli. The shiny metal parked inside Modi’s garages included a Rolls Royce Ghost, a Porsche Panamera, a Mercedes-Benz GLS 350 and a CLS-Class, and several other more commonplace sedans such as three Hondas, a Toyota Fortuner and an Innova. The paintings included art works by top artists, including M F Husain, Francis Newton Souza, Vasudev Gaitonde and Amrita Sher Gil, among others. “We will be getting in touch with an expert for the valuations of the paintings,” an ED official told Mirror.

A day after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said he had shared cordial relations with Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray despite their political differences, Uddhav Thackeray taunted him for showing his affection by arresting his father when he was 70 years old.

“They tried to arrest the Sena chief [Bal Thackeray] in 2000 when he was 70 years old. We never saw any fondness at that time. No one was ready to take a stance. In fact, all the focus was on how to trap Balasaheb,” Uddhav alleged.
