1. 45 ‘Dead’ Vehicles Towed Away in Goregaon West

Taking a cue from the relentless citizen activism undertaken by residents of Kandivali East against abandoned vehicles that took up precious space in their area, Goregaon residents, too, have begun ridding their roads and pavements of ‘dead’ cars.

On May 29, Mirror had launched the Operation Khataara campaign, highlighting the efforts of the Soch Sayani group in Thakur Village, Kandivali East, which launched a drive to rid its roads of abandoned cars and bikes.

Large quantities of biomedical waste, including medical bottles, syringes and needles, were found dumped on the sea shore behind PD Hinduja Hospital in Mahim, two months after a similar incident was reported at Dadar beach.

While hospital authorities said they haven’t dumped the waste, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) is yet to track down the offenders. “We segregate and dispose of all sharp and biomedical waste at source and dispose it of, according to the MPCB guidelines, through authorised vendors. We would like to clarify that the medical waste has not been generated by the hospital or disposed of by the hospital staff,” said the spokesperson of the hospital.

4. Mumbai Civic Body to Provide Legal Aid to Women Facing Domestic Violence

A civic-run centre which helps victims of domestic violence has launched a free legal assistance facility for women to make them aware of their legal rights.

Two advocates will be present between 2 and 5pm on the first and third Fridays of every month at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation-run Savitribai Phule Gender Resource Center (SPGRC) in Elphinstone, said a civic official. The facility was started with help from the District Legal Aid Services Authority.

There are 11 counselling centres called Dilaasa across the city’s peripheral hospitals. These provide guidance to women who face domestic violence. Women from these centres will also be directed to avail legal aid. Dr Kamakshi Bhate, secretary, SPGRC, said that nearly 5 to 10% cases of domestic violence need legal assistance as their situation doesn’t improve despite repeated counselling given to them and their partners.
